Baxter: In A Perfect World, Bafana Should Be Coached By A South African

Stuart Baxter Thinks That In A Perfect World Bafana Bafana Should Be Coached By A South African

South African national team head coach, Stuart Baxter reveals that he thinks, in a perfect world the national team should be coached by a South African.

The Englishman took over the reins at Bafana last year after Shakes Mashaba was relieved from his duty as the national team’s head coach.

Baxter, who recently named his official 25-man squad for the upcoming Four-Nation tournament, also called him Orlando Pirates’ assistant coach, Rhulani Mokwena to be part of Bafana’s technical bench.

“There are different levels there, yes we want this to be a thing that we do more often, (but) you can’t every camp have a different coach pitching up, so maybe some of the coaches will be a recurring thing. Yes, you do want to find out exactly how good is the coach,” Baxter explained his reasoning behind calling up the young coach.

The Englishman then went on to explain that while he is honoured to be the head coach of the South African national team, ideally, a nation should be coached by one of their own.

“If I am being brutally honest and this is not me trying to harm anybody, if I am being brutally honest, when I was in England, the English media wanted an English national coach. Ericson was the coach, he was Swedish and they loved him to bits but they would prefer to have an English coach,” Baxter said on SAFA’s official website.

“And I am sure, without being nasty or without being racist, South Africa should be coached by a South African in a perfect world.

“In lieu of not being a suitable candidate at that moment, you can look elsewhere. I am very proud to be a South African national coach and I am very honoured, but I hope that I give everybody the correct impression of what I am saying right now.”

But I think that it is a part of my job and our duty to empower those young South African coaches, the same as those young South African players, one day, maybe (Coach) Rhulani (Mokwena) or maybe Thabo Senong will be the senior national team coach,” he added.
