Stuart Baxter Not Taking FIFA World Cup Qualifier Preparations Lightly

By Soccer Laduma - Jul 21, 2017 05:30 PM

Bafana Bafana Head Coach Stuart Baxter has revealed that he will not let the Chan tournament jeopardise his preparations for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The South African national team will play the second leg of the Chan qualifiers against Botswana on Saturday, July 22, following their 2-0 win in the second leg.

Should Bafana progress to the third of the qualifiers, Baxter’s Chan squad will once again be in action in next month in August.

However, the country’s third 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier is set to take place against Cape Verde on August, 28 and speaking to the South African Football Association’s official website, Baxter revealed that he is set to find a middle ground between benefiting from the Chan tournament and not jeopardising his FIFA World Cup qualifying preparations.

“We have a game to play now against Botswana when we win that one we go through and then we face Zambia. If I am on that camp then I walk away a few days before we go to Cape Verde. So the question is what will be my involvement in that camp given the fact that I have to prepare properly for a vital World Cup qualifier,” Baxter said on SAFA’s official website.

“We don’t want to give it (CHAN) away, we don’t want to give away the experience that it will give us but in terms of our staffing on that camp that’s something that we are going to discuss because the World Cup qualifier is vital.”

“But one thing we are not going to do is to have a go at CHAN at the expense of our preparations for vital World Cup qualifiers. I have spoken to the SAFA CEO and have already put forward recommendations on how we should staff it so that it doesn’t interfere with the World Cup qualifiers and that’s really important,” the Englishman added.
