Baxter’s Nigeria Guarantee…
Stuart Baxter says that Bafana Bafana will put up a big fight when they lock horns with Nigeria this afternoon, insisting that they plan to halt any revenge mission they might have.
There has been plenty of talk of the Super Eagles gunning for revenge in South Africa this weekend after South Africa’s 2-0 win last year, but Baxter isn’t worried about that, insisting that they will come up against a fired up Bafana at FNB Stadium.
Both sides know that a victory today will see them qualify for the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, and Bafana’s coach – who has beaten Nigeria twice – believes that the game will be an extremely close one.
He told the media, “We went a long time getting hammered by them, then we went to Ujo and beat them. I don’t think Ujo or the times that we’ve lost to them will play any part in this game. Wanting revenge is one thing… Getting it is another.
“There’s 90 minutes to be played, there’s an opponent on the other side of the field from them, and we’re not going to lay down and die. This game is going to go right to the wire. I can’t guarantee a win, but I can guarantee that if they’re going to beat us, they’re going to have to work really, really hard.”
The encounter between the two teams will kick off at 15h00 this afternoon, half an hour after the other game in Group E – between Seychelles and Libya – gets underway.
