English Attacker On Baxter’s Bafana Radar

Stuart Baxter Is Looking At Tom Barkhuizen For Bafana

By Joe Crann - Mar 12, 2018 03:25 PM @YesWeCrann

With Stuart Baxter looking to widen the pool of talent available to him for Bafana Bafana, it’s thought that a Preston North End player has made his way onto his radar.

See Barkhuizen in action in the gallery above

Baxter recently confirmed that he had persuaded Joel Untersee, a defender on the books of Juventus but on loan with Empoli, to become part of the national team setup with South Africa, despite the fact that the 24-year-old has represented Switzerland at youth level.

Check out this goal from Barkhuizen that won Goal of the Month:

Now, as the national coach looks towards the future, Siya sources have suggested that he’s also keeping tabs on Preston’s Tom Barkhuizen, a player who was born in England but has South African heritage.

Barkhuizen has scored eight goals and got six assists in the English Championship for PNE this season, becoming a regular with the Lilywhites - a club Baxter played for during his career - last season following his move from Morecambe at the start of last year.

The attacker, who can play either on the wing or up front, has scored 45 goals since the start of the 2011/12 season, is thought to be eligible for Bafana due to his South African parentage.

Having spent the bulk of his career playing on the right wing, Barkhuizen could add some experience and firepower to Bafana’s attack if he does end up playing for the South African national team, but at this point in time, it remains to be seen if that will be an option or not.

Should Baxter look to get Barkhuizen involved?

Where is the team that played olympic How many players under20 in team .Other countrys give debutants to players as young as 17 not 29

Like Percy Tau, he is versatile and gives us options either as a right-winger or a second striker. Lars Veldwijk, Lebo Mothiba, Tom Barkhuizen and Percy Tau as strikers - the puzzle pieces are falling into place.

Looks like Baxter will end up making Bafana Bafana a United Nations - European team playing for Mzansi. As far as my memory goes all these Europeans who were "loaned" or "hired" to play for Bafana Bafana in the past failed big time and me for one is not surprised because those who agree to play for Mzansi they only do so because they will have failed to the national teams where they are - & yes they don't make it there because they are not good enough to play for a national team. Me for one will cheer a Bafana Bafana team even when they are losing to Rwanda as long as the team is composed of true South African players. I cannot waste time supporting a Bafana Bafana team with Europeans who don't have a place they call home in Mzansi.
