With Stuart Baxter looking to widen the pool of talent available to him for Bafana Bafana, it’s thought that a Preston North End player has made his way onto his radar.

Baxter recently confirmed that he had persuaded Joel Untersee, a defender on the books of Juventus but on loan with Empoli, to become part of the national team setup with South Africa, despite the fact that the 24-year-old has represented Switzerland at youth level.

Now, as the national coach looks towards the future, Siya sources have suggested that he’s also keeping tabs on Preston’s Tom Barkhuizen, a player who was born in England but has South African heritage.
Barkhuizen has scored eight goals and got six assists in the English Championship for PNE this season, becoming a regular with the Lilywhites - a club Baxter played for during his career - last season following his move from Morecambe at the start of last year.
The attacker, who can play either on the wing or up front, has scored 45 goals since the start of the 2011/12 season, is thought to be eligible for Bafana due to his South African parentage.
Having spent the bulk of his career playing on the right wing, Barkhuizen could add some experience and firepower to Bafana’s attack if he does end up playing for the South African national team, but at this point in time, it remains to be seen if that will be an option or not.
Should Baxter look to get Barkhuizen involved?
