Baxter’s Bafana Plan For Bucs Youngster & Co.
Stuart Baxter Is Eager To Give Experience To Young Bafana Players
Stuart Baxter is hoping to make sure that every player who is part of Bafana Bafana’s COSAFA Cup squad gets the chance to gain some international experience by the end of the tournament.
So far, Baxter has handed out seven debuts over the last week as youngsters such as Gift Links and Lyle Foster got to take their senior international bows, and – while he’s hoping to win the plate final on Friday – he’s hoping to do so once again.
Bafana suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar over the weekend after they failed to take their chances in normal time but managed to score four this week as they trounced Namibia 4-1 to set up a plate final with Botswana.
Several players in the current squad are seen as being bright talents for the future of South African football, but Baxter says that even though he’s looking to hand out some experience, they still want to get their win on Friday evening.
Speaking to the media after the victory over Namibia, Baxter said, “We want to everybody to have played if we can. We want the young ones that we think need that international experience, that’s why I put Lyle on in the last 10 or 15 minutes because he needs it.
“It’s a final, you want to win the game, but you certainly want to make sure you stay true to yourself otherwise you’ll keep bouncing backwards and forwards and never get the experience for those players that we need. I won’t sacrifice the result.”
Bafana face the Zebras at 17h00 at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
