A Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has suffered an injury while on duty for the South African national team.
The South African Football Association confirmed yesterday that Sibusiso Vilakazi has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad to face Seychelles in back-to-back Africa Cup Of Nations qualifiers this month.
According to SAFA, Vilakazi has ruptured one of his Achilles tendons.
“Midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi is out of the Seychelles games after rupturing his left tendon Achilles, Bafana Bafana Doctor, Thulani Ngwenya confirmed on Wednesday. The technical team was still to discuss whether they would call a replacement or not,” the association confirmed on their official website.
Despite no confirmation yet from SAFA, Cape Town City announced that Gift Links has been called up to the national team, with an indication that the player will be replacing the injured Vilakazi.
However, this means that Sundowns are facing yet another injury to a key player.
The club recently confirmed that the likes of Aubrey Ngoma, George Lebese and Anthony Laffor, Thapelo Morena and Themba Zwane are all nursing injuries, although the international break could be a good time for the players to recover before the Brazilians return to both domestic and CAF Champions League action in the coming weeks.
