Shakes On His Bafana Future: I Don't Read Newspapers

Bafana Bafana head coach Shakes Mashaba has batted away talk of a possible exit from the national team ahead of tonight's clash with Egypt in Johannesburg.

South Africa face the Pharaohs at Orlando Stadium this evening as they look to become the first Bafana side to win three back-to-back Nelson Mandela Challenges in over a decade, but there has been speculation that it could be Mashaba's last game with the team.

Bafana endured a poor Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which saw them win just one of their six matches, while they managed just one goal at home over three games.

Discussing his critics, the 66-year-old said: "Criticism is something that is always there. You are being criticised even when you are eating. People will tell you that you eat too much. So we have accepted that and have learned to live with that. Most unfortunately, you don't get exactly what people want to tell you about with this criticism. They will say the team didn't play well but you never get any elaboration about all those things.

"I once mentioned last time if this opposition could come and play us at the training session, I don't doubt we can beat them because everybody is flying, everybody is playing good but when we get to the game, it is a different story because we are playing against a team that has plans as well. They didn't just come there as sheep to slaughter."

When asked about his future as head coach of Bafana, Mashaba replied: "I don't read newspapers so I know nothing about that until somebody comes and tells me that this is what is happening.

"I don't read newspapers and with that I am not joking. I am serious. If there is something that somebody wants to tell me, then they have to come to me. If there is somebody who wanted to tell me something, then they would have come to me."

There have been suggestions that tonight's game could be Mashaba's last with Bafana, although only time will tell as to whether that is the case or not.
