Bafana Bafana are facing Costa Rica in an international friendly game today, but will go into the game without an out-and-out striker.
Tokelo Rantie picked up an injury with his club, AFC Bournemouth, and was forced to withdraw while Thamsanqa Gabuza, along with his Orlando Pirates teammates, were also withdrawn following a long trip to and from Cairo to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup.
This has forced coach Mashaba to use Sibusiso Vilakazi as his number nine in the game, and that has raised questions amongst some quarters - but former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga believes the team can still do well despite not having an outright striker in Costa Rica.
“If you look at the few games we have played, we struggled to have all the strikers for the games and the coach has been doing well with what he has,” he told Soccer Laduma.
“I think (Sibusiso) Vilakazi and (George) Lebese can combine well up front because they have good support from the midfield as well. I know it’s tough to play without a striker but in such a situation the coach has to use what he has,” the former Leeds FC striker concluded.
