Following Nigeria's draw against South Africa on Saturday, the Super Eagles' coach Gernot Rohr spoke about his surprise at playing in front of an underwhelming crowd in such an important match.
"Our people told me that we had a lot of fans… I was not surprised," Rohr spoke about the large number of Nigerian supporters at the postmatch press conference following the 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana.
A lot of talk has been going around about the abysmal turn out at recent Bafana Bafana matches, with fans divided in their views on whether or not to actually support the national team.
Rohr went on to say, "I was surprised that the stadium was so empty. You have such a big game played, it’s so important game for your country and you only have, I don’t know – not even half of the stadium was full. I think that is a problem, I don’t understand why. If you have a match like that in Nigeria, you can have a stadium full of 200 000 people."
"I think even if the people who are here are very good, it’s not enough. I think we should have more in the future."
