Booth On How Baxter Will Line-Up For Nigeria Clash

Former Bafana Bafana international, Matthew Booth, has shared his views on the country’s upcoming Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier clash and how he thinks Head Coach, Stuart Baxter, will approach the game.

Bafana will lock horns with Nigeria on Saturday, June 10, in the opening encounter of the AFCON qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

As the national side undergo final preparations ahead of the clash, Head Coach Baxter will soon be faced with the tough task of choosing his matchday lineup with indications that he will have his full 25-man squad at his disposal.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, former Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town defender, Booth, thinks that Baxter will approach the game with a similar style as during his time at SuperSport United.

“If you look at his (Baxter’s) SuperSport team, he plays with what a lot of people think are quite defensive midfielders, Furman and Letsholonyane, but those type of players are typical box to box players so they do get forward quite a bit and they provide attack as well,” Booth said.

“I think he will probably go with something similar, he is probably going to put two defensive style midfielders but also encourage them especially for the 60-70 minutes to get forward as well,” he added.

The 40-year-old then went on to reveal that Bafana should maintain their physical presence throughout the encounter and shouldn’t feel threatened by a bigger West African side like Nigeria.

“What I liked about South Africa over the last couple of years under Shakes Mashaba, was that we played with a bit of arrogance and a lot of the smaller players actually went in for that tackles, they were quite physical, they didn’t let the bigger West African teams dominate.

“I think that we have to encourage that again, if Gordinho and Hlatshwayo play as centre backs, it has to start with those two - that kind of attitude and we have to dish it out ourselves and not let ourselves get pushed around and make sure that we have a physical presence throughout the ninety minutes,” he concluded.
