Maritzburg United defender Siyanda Xulu has capped off what he calls one of his best seasons.
The 26-year-old was named Bafana Bafana captain for the 2018 COSAFA Cup, currently being played in Polokwane, after a four-year hiatus from the national team.
“The harder you work at club level means you get to be called up to the national team. I know I can lead the players because I have it in my locker to do so. There is a good crop of players here who are very energetic and eager to work under Coach Stuart Baxter so we will do well.”
The Maritzburg United defender further noted that the COSAFA Cup could be the launching pad to reignite his international career ahead of the AFCON qualifiers.
“That’s the plan, to work hard and to be in the squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers but everything must be done in baby steps,” he concluded.
Baxter’s men have been given a bye in the first round and will only participate in the quarter-final stages of the competition. Bafana’s fixture takes place on 3 June 2018 and will be against the winners of Group A.
