Amajimbos Slump To Defeat In U17 WC Opener
FIFA U17 World Cup - Group E
Result: South Africa 1-2 Costa Rica
Date: 19 October 2015
Venue: Estadio Municipal Ester Roa
South Africa fell just short in their debut FIFA U17 World Cup clash as they lost 2-1 against Costa Rica on Monday.
Amajimbos made a poor start to the game and conceded the opening goal after only seven minutes. Kevin Masis caught the South African defence napping, sending a low cross in from the right channel, finding Andy Reyes who tapped home from close range.
Costa Rica had another good chance to double their lead in the 25th minute but they were caught offside.
The South Africans struggled to settle down in the first half and lost the ball too easily, making it difficult for them to build anything of note.
Goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto made a mistake just before the break when he came off his line and failed to collect the ball. However, the South Americans couldn't take advantage.
Amajimbos conceded a harsh penalty just past the hour mark when Cordoba's shot seemed to hit Mohamme high on his arm causing the referee to point to the spot. Reyes stepped up and smashed it into the top corner of the goal for his brace.
In the last 20 minutes Khanyisa Mayo had a decent chance to pull one back for Molefi Ntseki's charges, but he failed to put enough power behind the shot.
South Africa had something to celebrate in the 90th minute as they got on the scoresheet. A cross from Reeve Frosler from the left wing found Mayo at the far post and he looped a header into the top corner of the goal.
Here's how they lined up:
South Africa: Mondli Mpoto; Reeve Frosler; Katlego Mohamme; Thendo Mukumela; Simon Nqoi; Athenkosi Dlala; Wiseman Meyiwa; Nelson Maluleke(c); Sibongakonke Mbatha; Kobamelo Kodisang; Khanyisa Mayo
