Bafana Fail To Reach COSAFA Cup Semi-Finals

COSAFA Cup Report: South Africa v Madagascar, 03 June 2018

COSAFA Cup Quarterfinal

Result: Bafana Bafana 0-0 Madagascar (Madagascar won 4-3 on penalties)

Date: 3 June 2018

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Bafana Bafana failed to advance to the semi-finals of the COSAFA Cup after they lost 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar after their quarter-final match on Sunday finished 0-0.

Bafana created the first chance on goal in the fifth minute when Luther Singh played a short free-kick to Lebohang Maboe inside the box, but he flashed his shot from 14 yards out inches wide of the post.

The next effort on goal came in the 20th minute when Singh broke behind the Madagascar defence, but he failed to beat the keeper one-on-one.

Madagascar’s first shot on goal only came in the 33rd minute when Jaotombo Bourah unleashed a powerful 24-yard thunderbolt, but he saw his effort superbly tipped over the crossbar by SuperSport United goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse.

Two minutes later, Bafana were afforded a great opportunity to take the lead when Maboe broke through on goal, but he was stopped from close range by the Madagascar keeper.

Neither side could break the deadlock before the break and entered the tunnel locked at 0-0.

The first chance of the second half fell to Madagascar in the 48th minute when Bourah broke into the box from the left, but he was brilliantly denied by the massive frame of Pieterse.

Aubrey Modiba came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute when he picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box but his left-footed drive struck the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Ryan Moon had a chance to score when he met a Singh free-kick from the left, but he headed his effort inches wide of the target.

Neither side could find the winning goal in regular time and the game entered the dreaded penalty shoot-out, which Madagascar won 4-3 after misses from Jamie Webber and Singh.

Here is how they lined up:

South Africa: 16 Pieterse, 5 Xulu, 18 Modiba, 15 Fielies (20 Foster 85’), 2 Madisha, 11 Makaringe, 7 Maboe (19 Webber 85’), 12 Singh, 8 Ndlovu, 9 Moon, 10 Motupa (17 Mosiatlhaga 46’).

Subs:  1 Bvuma, 13 Khubeka,14 Ngezana, 3 Mako, 6 Meyiwa, 17 Mosiatlhaga, 4 Links, 19 Webber, 20 Foster.

How do you fire a coach who has not lost in 18 consecutive games? and replace him with a man who has lost 10 games in 12 games?

Was it necessary to fire Shakes Mashaba when there were no coaches available to replace him? I'm to trying to take SAFA backward but I'm comparing the current situation where Bafana can't even win against Madagascar in SA soil with Mashaba's era where we won Cloud le Roy led Congo Brazaville away from home. SAFA need to swallow their pride and admit that maybe it was a mistake to rehire this guy who can't win even COSAFA but you expect him to qualify for AFCON and World Cup

I REALLY DOUBT THAT THERE'S ANYONE WHO GETS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE RESULTS THAT BAFANA BAFANA HAS GIVEN US IN THE LAST 8 YEARS, WE ALWAYS EXPECTED THEM TO GIVE US SUCH, ESPECIALLY WITH DANNY AS THE HEAD.

Mashaba will be missed, how many games has Baxter lost in such a short period of time, against small countries, you can't fire a coach like mashaba for a coach like Baxter, Baxter failed in CAF with chiefs proving he is just PSL material, the problem is when hiring a coach we fail to look at such things, CAF games are important, baxter in not national team material, even Pitso was trying , unlike most of the coaches who coached banana banana baxter is losing games, the other coaches were struggling to win, or had too many draws, baxter is losing games

How many games must Baxter lose in a row in order for him to be sacked.... I mean it's 5 games now, he lost back to back with Mauritania now Madagascar, come on SAFA, is it because he is white?

So Baxter loses again and we blame the players . We are sick people in south africa. This man has made us so weak in football yet we still keep him on the job . When will we learn that we do not need an international useless coach. The stadiums should have been burnt when we lost to cape verde and senegal

if we can learn to choose players on merit, hopefully we will qualify for AFCON and SWC....Ask Germans how they do it, or get German coach with his technical staff

@Pyton I agree with you, possession on your own half doesnt help and this too many touches in the box i dont understand, I was watching brazil against Croatia yesterday few touches outside the box then they shoot unless someone is in a better pisition to score...

Baxter ! you will ruin your reputation with those bunch of losses just leave them before it gets worse, these players don't honor their flag. Come back to Chiefs and rise to glory again.

Bafana Bafana must be cancelled, we had a good coach in shakes mashaba but that zim robert marawa made show he is fired by poking him everyday, you can be arrogant whatsoever as long as our national team, i still say if mashaba was here maybe south africa would be russia now as speak but Jordaan full of politics and dictatorship fired mashaba for beating senegal.....last year it was better because it was under 23s.

There is nothing wrong with Baxter or Shakes and the list goes on. What is wrong is the way we play from 1998 till 2008. We hold the ball way too long in our own half, and then when we go forward we loose the ball easily. Our players like to touch the ball too many times before releasing it. Our average first half shots at goal per game is 3 and please look at the stats and that is not good enough. If we play at home we need to be more aggressive but we always look timid and soft. We play the same style of football whether we play Cameroon, Senegal or Cape Verde. We need to learn to adapt with the game and the the opposing team. Finally if I was a coach I would have substituted Lebogang Maboe purely from the fact that he cannot shoot and that is unacceptable on the international level. Our players cannot stick to the basics of one touch football. Sundowns and Pirates have proven it this past season that you don't have to hold the ball for too long to be effective.
