Bafana Fail To Reach COSAFA Cup Semi-Finals

COSAFA Cup Quarterfinal

Result: Bafana Bafana 0-0 Madagascar (Madagascar won 4-3 on penalties)

Date: 3 June 2018

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Bafana Bafana failed to advance to the semi-finals of the COSAFA Cup after they lost 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar after their quarter-final match on Sunday finished 0-0.

Bafana created the first chance on goal in the fifth minute when Luther Singh played a short free-kick to Lebohang Maboe inside the box, but he flashed his shot from 14 yards out inches wide of the post.

The next effort on goal came in the 20th minute when Singh broke behind the Madagascar defence, but he failed to beat the keeper one-on-one.

Madagascar’s first shot on goal only came in the 33rd minute when Jaotombo Bourah unleashed a powerful 24-yard thunderbolt, but he saw his effort superbly tipped over the crossbar by SuperSport United goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse.

Two minutes later, Bafana were afforded a great opportunity to take the lead when Maboe broke through on goal, but he was stopped from close range by the Madagascar keeper.

Neither side could break the deadlock before the break and entered the tunnel locked at 0-0.

The first chance of the second half fell to Madagascar in the 48th minute when Bourah broke into the box from the left, but he was brilliantly denied by the massive frame of Pieterse.

Aubrey Modiba came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute when he picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box but his left-footed drive struck the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Ryan Moon had a chance to score when he met a Singh free-kick from the left, but he headed his effort inches wide of the target.

Neither side could find the winning goal in regular time and the game entered the dreaded penalty shoot-out, which Madagascar won 4-3 after misses from Jamie Webber and Singh.
