COSAFA Cup Quarterfinal Report: Bafana Bafana v Tanzania 02 July 2017
Result: South Africa 0-1 Tanzania
Date: 02 July 2017
Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium
Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the COSAFA Cup semi-finals, after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tanzania in the quarterfinals
Bafana enjoyed an encouraging start to the clash and went close to scoring through Liam Jordan in the seventh minute.
However, Tanzania took the lead with their first meaningful chance in the 18th minute as Elias Maguri broke free on goal and volleyed home from close range, 0-1.
The South Africans, meanwhile, enjoyed more of the possession in the first half, as the likes of Jamie Webber and Lehlogonolo Maselesa combined well on a few occasions.
Chances were hard to come by for Bafana, and they had to wait until the 42nd minute for an opening as Liam Jordan picked out Judas Moseamedi, who volleyed wide from 12-yards out.
Other than scoring the only goal of the half, Tanzania barely threatened the Bafana defence in the opening 45 minutes but they went into the break leading by a lone goal.
Bafana should have been level 10 minutes into the second-half, but Cole Alexander failed to turn home Webber's cross in the six-yard box.
Stuart Baxter opted for a change in the 60th minute as Maritzburg United's Mohau Mokate came on for his national team debut, replacing Jordan.
The South Africans upped the tempo after 70 minutes, but they were let down by their decision-making in the final third.
With time running out, Baxter introduced Lebogang Maboe for Riyaad Norodien in the 77th minute as they pushed for an equaliser.
Bafana went in search of a leveler and were camped in the Tanzanian half in the closing stages, but they were unable to find the back of the net, with Lorenzo Gordinho squandering a big chance in stoppage time by blazing over from six-yards out.
Tanzania progress to the semi-finals, while Baxter's charges drop to the Plate section, where they will face Botswana.
Here's how they lined up:
Bafana: Pule (GK), Mukumela, Maela, Gordinho, Booysen, Masalesa (c), Alexander, Norodien (Maboe 77'), Webber, Jordan (Mokate 60'), Moseamedi.
