Zungu Targets AFCON After World Cup Disappointment
Bongani Zungu says that the players are as disappointed as the fans after Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Zungu was back in the starting line-up last night as South Africa lost 2-1 to Senegal in Dakar, and he believes that things would be different if they could only finish their chances.
Stuart Baxter’s side was on top of the Lions of Teranga for large periods of last night’s encounter, missing a penalty and numerous chances before the Senegalese grabbed a late winner thanks to Kara Mbodji.
"Of course it's very disappointing that we didn't qualify,” he said after the match. “I think we should have won the second game, we didn't take our chances. That is football for you. We are very disappointed. I'm sure the nation is disappointed in us but it's football.
“We have to pick our heads up and hopefully we do well in the AFCON next year. We have to keep our heads up and look forward to the future.”
When asked what Bafana were lacking, the Amiens man was blunt, saying, "We just don't score, the most important thing is to put the ball into the net. I think we have very good players, we play very well. I think there were times, especially in tonight's game where we move the ball very well, we just have to put the ball into the net.
“We had easy chances to score but that is football. If you don't take chances your opponent will take chances. I think the team is growing very well, we just have to use our chances."
Bafana’s next planned game sees them take on Libya in March in their next African Cup of Nations qualifier.
