Baxter’s ‘Keeper Dilemma: Keet Out, Khune Doubt

Baxter’s ‘Keeper Dilemma: Keet Out, Khune Doubt

By Soccer Laduma - Aug 22, 2017 05:46 PM
Stuart Baxter might be left with a goalkeeping headache this week, with Darren Keet being ruled out and Itumeleng Khune a doubt for the World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde.

Gavin Hunt confirmed on Tuesday that Keet, the reigning Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the season, has a knee problem that has ruled him out for now, meaning that he won’t be able to represent Bafana.

The Clever Boys’ head coach explained that Baxter does know about the situation, which would suggest that he’s already looking for a replacement.

He said, “Darren’s out, he’s got a knee problem. I just spoke to Stuart and told him. So Stuart knows and he has to make a change there.

“It’s unfortunate for both parties‚ because Darren might have got a chance to play‚ as I heard. The No.1 is injured. That’s Stuart’s problem at this point in time, but obviously it’s also a problem for us because I want to get Darren back and competing in time.”

Meanwhile, the Siya crew have been informed that Khune is also a big doubt for the upcoming Bafana camp, with his chest infection believed to be worst than first thought.

It remains to be seen whether Khune will have to withdraw from international duty, however if his infection is contagious then he may be left with no choice rather than risk it being picked up by any of his teammates. If Khune is taken out then it will leave just Ronwen Williams remaining from Baxter's original selections.

He is expected to at least miss Chiefs’ clash with SuperSport United on Wednesday night.
