Stuart Baxter has urged Kermit Erasmus to consider the recent Bafana Bafana call-up as a boost rather slump in dejection following his omission from the final 23-man squad headed to the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Cape Town City striker was among the casualties when the national team coach trimmed his team on Sunday afternoon, the Englishman opting for in-form striker Lars Veldwijk, who scored 24 goals in 41 matches in the Dutch second division during the season that has just ended.
“I spoke to Kermit and told him I think he has just got his career back on track, really, with Cape Town City and has done well. And I wanted to tell him that he is doing well by inviting him to this (provisional) squad,” Baxter explained to the media at the announcement.
“Right up until the last day he was in with a chance. He’s been very good, but I just think we have cover in those positions.”
Bafana, who will rely on Percy Tau, Lebo Mothiba, Veldwijk and Sibusiso Vilakazi upfront, will now play a friendly against Ghana in Dubai this Friday and Angola a few days before their AFCON opener against Ivory Coast on June 24.
