Baxter Confirms Capture Of Juventus Defender
Stuart Baxter has confirmed that he has managed to persuade Juventus defender, Joel Untersee, to play for Bafana Bafana, with him having previously represented Switzerland at youth level.
The full-back, who is currently on loan at Empoli in Serie B, was born in Benoni but left for Switzerland at a young age where he joined FC Zurich and then Italian giants, Juve, as a teenager.
Untersee has played for Switzerland in several youth groups, but is now expected to make his Bafana debut at some point this year.
Baxter told the Siya crew, “He’s a South African but he’s been gone a long time, and when you bring them back from Europe or elsewhere, then you need to be a bit patient with them to get used to playing with South Africans.
“I’m hoping that once he gets acclimatised and we get used to him, then he’ll be a useful addition to the players that we have at our disposal.”
So will we see him in the upcoming squad for this month’s FIFA break? Not according to Baxter, who says that they’re leaving him to his club demands this time around.
He said, “Empoli are battling at the top of Serie B, we don’t want to make things difficult with regards to getting all the paperwork and flying him in and out, so we’ll wait until their league situation has sorted itself out and then we’ll start the process of getting him ready to play for us.”
Untersee has played 13 games for Empoli this season, and has four assists to his name.
