South Africa’s Erick Mathoho was not the only player banned and fined by FIFA this month, with Dele Alli, Alex Witsel and four others also being punished by the governing body in similar circumstances.
Mathoho’s one-game suspension was extended to two games by FIFA after they deemed his kick on a Cape Verdean opponent to be ‘violent conduct’, also issuing him with a fine of CHF 5,000 (around R70,000).
Though some fans seemingly thought that ‘Tower’ had been treated unfairly by FIFA, he was not the only one who was given that treatment, with Belgium’s Witsel, Tamas Priskin of Hungary, Iran’s Saeid Ezatolahi Afagh and Trinidad & Tobago man, Alvin Jones, being handed the exact same punishment following their red cards.
Meanwhile, England’s Dele Alli was given a one-game ban and fined the same amount for ‘offensive behaviour’ during England’s win over Slovakia last month.
Stuart Baxter called up Motjeka Madisha to replace Mathoho after SAFA were informed of the Kaizer Chiefs man’s extended suspension.
