Venue Revealed For Bafana’s AFCON Crunch Clashes
The venue has been confirmed for Bafana Bafana’s final two African Cup of Nations qualifiers, games that Stuart Baxter’s side must win.
Bafana have four points from two games against Nigeria and Libya as they prepare for their third game – against Seychelles – next month, and it has now been announced that their last two home clashes against the Islanders and the Super Eagles will be played in Johannesburg.
Baxter bemoaned the decision to take Libya to Durban as it forfeited their altitude advantage, and that could well have played a role in the decision to let FNB Stadium host the last two home games of the qualifiers.
It was confirmed in a statement from Stadium Management SA today, who said, “Stadium Management SA (SMSA) is ready to welcome Bafana Bafana to FNB Stadium for two of the upcoming AFCON 2019 qualifying matches.
"SMSA has acquired the commercial rights of both matches and will be promoting the events as rights owner and partner to SAFA. Bafana Bafana will face Seychelles on 13 October 2018 and Nigeria on 17 November 2018. Both matches are now confirmed to take place at the iconic FNB Stadium with kick-off at 15h00.”
Baxter has been dealt two heavy blows with the news that both Bongani Zungu and Keagan Dolly will miss the games due to injury, and he will be hoping to see other players put up their hands in an attempt to plug the hole left by the French-based duo.
