Bafana v Messi’s Argentina Unlikely
Bafana Bafana’s players are unlikely to get the chance to face Lionel Messi’s Argentina before the World Cup, with the chances of a friendly encounter now looking slim.
The Siya crew reported earlier this week that there was a chance of the two nations facing each other in Spain prior to La Albiceleste’s departure for the World Cup in Russia, with the Argentines undergoing their preparations there.
While there has been no official comment from SAFA regarding the potential friendly, Siya sources have suggested that the chances of it happening have taken a knock, with Argentina reportedly not sure about their plans before facing Iceland in their opening game on June 16th.
Stuart Baxter is thought to have designated the COSAFA Cup to South Africa’s U23s as part of their preparations for the U23 African Cup of Nations, and with no World Cup to look forward to, Bafana have no planned fixtures until September.
Should the fixture against Argentina not go ahead, then it is likely that SAFA will look to organise another fixture or mini-tournament in order to get the team together prior to the AFCON qualifiers later in the year.
