Jali: South Africans Expect A Lot

Bafana Bafana midfielder, Andile Jali, says that he and his teammates would be happy to reach the semifinals of the African Cup of Nations and knows what the South African expectations are.

The KV Oostende midfielder has been in fine form for both club and country in 2014, playing a vital role as Shakes Mashaba’s men managed to maintain an unbeaten run throughout their AFCON qualifying campaign.

Speaking to Nieuwsblad before leaving for Mzansi over the weekend, Jali says that he’s excited ahead of the tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

He said, “I’m looking forward to the Nations Cup finals, but first we must perform against Zambia and Cameroon in friendly matches.

“We’re in a difficult group but we will go all out to advance. Experts say we are in the ‘Group of Death’ and with only two teams qualifying, we just have to work as hard as we can to make our country proud of us. South African fans expect a lot from us, maybe even more than we can actually give them.”

When asked for his predictions for Bafana, the 24-year-old said, "It’s difficult to make predictions about our chances. Algeria, Ghana and Senegal have much more experience at Nations Cup finals. They have several players who play for big European clubs and have been together for three years as a team.

“We have only been together three months. We are a new team with a new coach. In our pool you can say we are outsiders, but outsiders can surprise."

“I played for a top club in South Africa and my experience with Pirates ensures that I never suffer from pressure. We want to show the best of the best and if we reach the semi-finals, we’ll be happy. Pleasure comes only after results.”

Jali is being assessed by Bafana’s doctors today as they look to judge the extent of the knee injury that would have kept him out of Oostende’s final game of 2014 had it not been postponed due to bad weather.
