Bafana Held To Frustrating Draw By Cameroon
2017 Afcon Qualifier
Result: South Africa 0-0 Cameroon
Date: 29 March 2016
Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium
South Africa's 2017 Afcon qualification hopes were crushed on Tuesday as they drew 0-0 with Cameroon.
The hosts had an early shot on target thanks to debutant Sifiso Hlanti who curled a free kick that was tipped over the top by Ondoa.
In the 14th minute Bafana had a decent chance to take the lead. Hlanti showed strength on the left and crossed for Thulani Hlatshwayo but his header hit the ground and bounced over the bar.
The Indomitable Lions had a great chance from a free kick in the 28th minute when the dead-ball was sent towards Aboubakar who just needed a touch to direct it home, but he couldn't make contact.
At the other end of the pitch Tokelo Rantie and Thulani Serero combined with a deft one-two to set up a good chance for the latter, but he decided to square for Rantie instead of shooting and lost the ball.
There was a flurry of chances around the hour mark, starting with a free kick from Hlanti that forced a save, before Hlompho Kekana attempted a long-range strike which went just wide.
Cameroon had a double chance at the other end. A long ball forward fell for Aboubakar but he couldn't find the target. Another attack a minute later gave Ndi a chance, but his shot was blocked.
Prince Nxumalo, who came on for Thamsanqa Gabuza, had a chance in stoppage time, but his shot was blocked. Serero then went down in the box and appealed for a penalty, but nothing was given and the game finished all square.
