Gabuza Misses Spot-Kick As Bafana Hold Mauritania

2017 Africa Cup Of Nations Qualifier
Result: Bafana Bafana 1-1 Mauritania
Date: 02 September 2016
Venue: Mbomela Stadium
Thamsanqa Gabuza had a penalty saved, as Bafana Bafana drew 1-1 with 10-man Mauritania in their final Afcon qualifier.
The encounter got off to a cagey affair, with neither side showing any attacking intent in the opening 10 minutes.
However, the visitors broke the deadlock after 16 minutes courtesy of a well-placed finish from Dialo Guideye, after a collapse in the Bafana midfielder.
Shakes Mashaba's charges managed to level matters just under 10 minutes later when Hlompho Kekana headed home from six-yards out.
Bafana started seeing more of the ball after taking the lead but struggled to create chances, with the likes of Vilakazi and Makola being heavily marked in the final third.
Despite the hosts' dominance in the closing stages of the opening half, the score remained 1-1 as the sides entered the halftime break.
Bafana were awarded a penalty 10 minutes into the second half when Camara was adjudged to have handled in the box. However, Thamsanqa Gabuza stepped up and had his spot-kick saved by Boubacar.
Mashaba went on to make two changes after 60 minutes, as he introduced Tokelo Rantie for Gabuza, while Dean Furman replaced Kekana.
Mauritania were then reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute, when Ismael Diakhite deliberately handled the ball and he picked up his second yellow card.
With Bafana searching for a winning goal, Mashaba introduced Gift Motupa for Vilakazi for the final 10 minutes.
The home side pushed for a winning goal with the numerical advantage in the closing stages, but could not bypass the Mauritania defence and were forced to settle for a point.
The point sees Mashaba's side finish the group in third spot behind leaders Cameroon and Mauritania.
Here's how they lined up:
Bafana Bafana: Khune, Mobara, Langerman, Mphahlele, Hlatshwayo (c), Jali, Kekana, Makola, Modiba, Vilakazi, Gabuza.
Mauritania: Souleymane, Wade, N'diaye, Sally, Camara, Guideye, Yaly, El Id, Khalil, Bagili, Diakhite.
