2018 World Cup Qualifier

Result: Cape Verde 2-1 Bafana Bafana

Date: 01 September 2017

Venue: Estadio Nacional

Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday evening.

It was an evenly contested affair in the opening 10 minutes with both teams sizing each other up on the artificial turf.

Stuart Baxter's charges broke the deadlock in the 14th minute as Tokelo Rantie accelerated past two defenders before calmly slotting past Dias.

Cape Verde continued to enjoy the lion's share of the ball even after falling behind but they failed test Ronwen Williams in the opening 30 minutes.

However, the home side leveled matters in the 31st minute when Nuno Rocha found the back of the net with a deflected effort.

The hosts were then awarded a penalty seven minutes later when Dean Furman was adjudged to have committed a foul on Ryan Mendes. Rocha stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 2-1.

Bafana pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the half, but the score remained 2-1 at the halftime break.

As Bafana looked for a way back into the clash, Stuart Baxter introduced Bradley Grobler for Lebogang Manyama in the 52nd minute.

Bafana's task was made even tougher in the 66th minute when Erick Mathoho was shown a straight red card for a late tackle.

The hosts nearly extended their lead in the 73rd minute, but Williams proved his worth by producing a good save at the near post.

Even with the introduction of Grobler and Kamohelo Mokotjo, Bafana found it tough to create chance chances in the 18-yard area.

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, Percy Tau ws introduced for the final 10 minutes but Bafana were unable to get the equaliser as Cape Verde held on for the win.

Here's how they lined up:

Cape Verde: Dias. Almeida, Stopira, Rodrigues, Vally, Soares, Rocha, Babanco, Fernandes, Tavares, Mendes.

South Africa: Williams, Langerman, Mathoho, Hlatshwayo, Mphahlele, Furman, Zungu (Mokotjo 61'), Dolly, Zwane, Manyama (Tau 52'), Rantie (Tau 80')

Mathoho's performance of late is way below par and going forward he need to improve at team level before he can be considered for National team. The Coach selection need to be based on curent form and need to trust on building the team for the future and stop delaying progress by calling the likes of Daniels, Gould, wereas we have young stars that shows hunger and eagerness to compete. at what basic did he select Piterse and Sandilands it puzzles
