On ugly scenes after the Pirates vs. Sundowns game
What happened at Orlando Stadium was really bad. Orlando Pirates supporters brutally attacked Johannes Maseko, a Mamelodi Sundowns Atteridgeville branch member. Again, the people who are supposed to protect us – the security personnel and the police – just looked at the incident and watched him being beaten up. The poor guy was hospitalised at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. The PSL never fined Pirates for a similar incident that happened at Loftus Stadium back in February. Why are they doing this? Why do Pirates supporters fight when their team loses a game? We go to the stadiums to enjoy ourselves, together with our children and families. We need to be safe at the stadiums. This is just not on. The PSL must suspend Pirates supporters for five games. Maybe after that, they’ll know that this is football, the most celebrated sport in the country, and we don’t need people that are fighting. We will open a case against these supporters. It is just too bad for the image of our Beautiful Game.
On the league title race
The race is still on. Bidvest Wits might be leading for now, but Sundowns are so determined to defend their throne and it’s going to be interesting to see how everything unfolds really. There are three games left to play for almost all the teams and a lot can still happen. Even if Wits wins it in the end, Masandawana will finish in position two, which will automatically qualify us for the CAF Champions League. I believe in my boys and I trust that they will make me smile.
On Supporters Club Vision 2017
At Supporters Club, we set ourselves a target that at least by the end of 2017 the stadiums are full whenever our teams are playing. We are well on course to achieve that. We’re almost there. If I were to gauge it on percentage, I would say we are 70 percent there and that is encouraging to see. We are once again urging all football supporters to come and join us. Our membership is free and the more everybody joins the lesser the incidents similar to the one that occurred last weekend (Sundowns vs. Pirates supporters brawl). We are one big family here. We don’t have time to fight but invest all our energies in bettering ourselves as football supporters in South Africa.
Cheers
Bassie
