Hello, football lovers
On the Nedbank Cup Last 16
Eish… firstly, my heart is sore because my beloved Mamelodi Sundowns is out of the competition. But the tournament itself is very good and augurs well for the development of football in the country. The amateur teams that are given the chance really do well and their players are selling themselves to the PSL teams. Having watched all the games, I think Orlando Pirates will win the cup this season.
On Sundowns’ current form
Having gone six games without a win, I think the continental competitions have taken their toll on Sundowns players. They also became a bit overconfident after their recent achievements and that can be very dangerous in football. Players should remain levelheaded to achieve more in the game, otherwise, football will humble you in a very uncompromising way. Boys like Percy Tau have dropped in form and sometimes the technical team has to be brave enough to start him on the bench in some games. They must re-focus because they relax too much now. The supporters will lose their patience soon and the last thing we want is hooliganism in our stadiums. We are seeing a totally different Sundowns to the one that conquered Africa with good displays. The team is disjointed now, but surely, coach Pitso Mosimane is working around the clock to change that.
On supporters’ behaviour
I’m happy to notice that supporters are behaving well now. I think it’s because there’s Supporters Club that keeps condemning the hooliganism. There are also provincial structures for all the teams’ supporters and that seems to be working well. Remember we are supporters, not haters. We love our teams and, in love, violence has no room.
On the approaching PSL finish line
We are almost at the end of the race now and, realistically, I think we are going to have new champions come the end of the season. I don’t see Sundowns defending their throne this season. They didn’t capitalise on their games in hand and lost a lot of points. There is no consistency in most of the teams that are in the top five of the log. That makes the race to be still open. It certainly looks like it’s going to go down to the wire.
Till next time
Bassie
