We Must Beat Nigeria!

On Mamelodi Sundowns’ loss against Esperance

Eish, I really don’t know what to say about this game! I can’t say we were robbed, but I really don’t know what is going on with our players. I think they’re overconfident or something. I mean, if you check, they were playing seriously but failed to create and score enough chances. You know, when playing in the continental games, you have to win your home games and capitalise on those chances. If you fail to do that, your chances of going far are very slim. We went into the game sitting second in our group and we’re now third, in Group C. This is not right at all and if we want to conquer Africa, we have to take every game seriously. If we want a second star above our badge, we have to do much better than we did on Friday night. You don’t lose at home, especially in this competition. Our players tend to take their foot off the pedal at times and I’m not going to blame anyone, even though Soumahoro Bangaly conceded a penalty right at the end. Yes, we had injuries and all that but, with the quality we have in the team, that can’t be an excuse. We have to pull up our socks; otherwise, we will go through the same heartbreaking experience we went through in the league.

On SSU & Platinum Stars’ performance

I watched SuperSport United’s game against TP Mazembe and they really wanted to win. They gave their all, playing against a very strong team, away from home. So they deserve credit for their getting a point in Lubumbashi. They were focused and showed a lot of character. I really want to congratulate and tell them to keep it up. May they continue to raise our flag high and make the country proud. Unfortunately, I missed Platinum Stars’ game and maybe that’s because, unlike Sundowns and SuperSport, it is like they don’t want this thing as much as we do. If you look at their performances, they’ve not been convincing at all, so I’m not surprised they lost 3-0 against CS Sfaxien.

On Bafana’s game

We must beat Nigeria! We’ve got a very good and balanced squad called up by coach Stuart Baxter. So we must win against Nigeria and I know we have not done so well against them in the past, but now is the time to change all of that. I have confidence in the team and I wish them everything of the best for this crucial game. Go out there and make South Africa proud by beating Nigeria in their own backyard, with all the odds stacked against you.

Cheers
