The Tunisian left-back squandered a chance to get the Red Devils back in the tie on 17 minutes after his penalty was saved by Raja goalkeeper Anas Zniti.
The miss did not prove costly though, as Mohamed Abdelmonem got the all-important away goal just before the halftime break with a neat header.
Maaloul, however, did apologise to the rest of the team and is motivated ahead of the semi-finals, where they will face ES Setif.
“We deserve our place in the semi-finals. Our fighting spirit was the key for us tonight. The next stages will be more difficult but we are motivated and ready to fight to win the Champions League title," the Tunisian said, as per the club's official website.
“I apologized to my teammates and the coaching staff after missing the penalty and I am so happy that we achieved our target against a strong side.”
