Namibia senior national team head coach, Ricardo Mannetti, has commented on his selection as Virgil Vries was excluded from the Africa Cup of Nations squad.
Having parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs in May, as the Soweto giants confirmed at the time that they entered into a 'mutual termination and release agreement' with the player, Vries still made it into Namibia’s provisional squad in preparation for the upcoming AFCON.
However, the goalkeeper has now been dropped as Mannetti announced the Brave Warriors’ final 23-man squad going to Egypt.
Black Leopards defender Chris Katjiukua, who was also named in the provisional squad, has since been dropped from the squad.
“We feel this team has the right energy, they are right for the tactics and will represent Namibia to the best of their abilities. These are the right players with the right work ethic and harmony,” said Mannetti in explaining his squad, as reported in Namibia.
Namibia are in the same group as South Africa, Morocco and Ivory Coast. Their first match in Group D will take place against Morocco on June 23, while the second fixture is against Bafana Bafana on June 28, before taking on Ivory Coast on July 01 in their final group match.
