As the dust settles on Bafana Bafana’s quarter-final exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, there are question marks over Stuart Baxter’s future…
South Africa reached the quarter-finals of the AFCON for the first time since 2013, but were knocked out after a last-minute winner from Nigeria saw the Super Eagles progress to the semi-finals with a 1-0 victory.
Bafana are due back in South Africa on Saturday as they fly back to Mzansi from Egypt, and there seems to be a chance that Baxter may have been in charge of his final game with the team.
According to Siya sources, it is far from certain that Baxter – whose major victories in this stint were against Nigeria and Egypt in their own backyards – will remain with the South African Football Association now that Bafana’s tournament is over.
Baxter’s record at AFCON 2019 reads as two victories, including that big victory over the Pharaohs – and three defeats at the hands of Ivory Coast, Morocco and Nigeria.
The Englishman has previously voiced his discontent with Bafana’s preparations ahead of the showpiece in Egypt, and only time will tell what the future holds with SAFA.
