SAFA Comments On Bafana Staff Bonuses

The South African Football Association is currently addressing grievances from Bafana Bafana technical staff members who have claimed they are being sidelined with regards to bonuses for the Africa Cup of Nations.

With coach Stuart Baxter’s men now guaranteed R520 000 for reaching the quarterfinals of the AFCON in Egypt, it is understood that – despite no reported uproar inside the national team base – the men behind the scenes feel they are being overlooked.

In an email sent to acting SAFA CEO Russell Paul and Gronie Hluyo, the chief financial officer, the national team staff raise concerns over payments owed for the COSAFA Cup and Dubai camp prior to the AFCON as well as whether they would be paid an additional incentive for the continental showpiece. It would appear their concerns for subsistence allowance were raised long before heading to Cairo.

The Siya crew has seen the email and approached Paul for comment – the acting CEO offered the following written response:

  • There was no different agreement with the technical staff at this tournament than any other tournament. We had a query from one member asking if there would be bonuses for technical staff and indicated to him that this has never been the case, but that the matter will be reviewed, without any commitment. The individual was happy with the response. Prior to departure there was no hint or indication from any of the technical staff on any discontent in this regard, wanting to negotiate a deal for the tournament.
  • SAFA has a principled agreement to pay the technical staff within 30 days after an event. In some cases we were challenged to meet this, after explaining to the technical staff. In this case, we however agreed with them in writing to pay by Friday 12th, for activities related prior to this date.
  • Daily allowances have never been a part of technical staff payments, as they are covered on a full board and lodge basis when traveling with the team. No staff, whether contract or permanent receive daily allowances.
  • The players are also taking a risk becuase if they don't win anything they don't get any money. The staff still get salaries, win or lose.

Paul maintained that the mood in the camp remained a jubilant one as Bafana prepare to face Nigeria on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the AFCON and that SAFA found it "distasteful" that the matter was being raised on the eve of "one of the biggest matches for the team" when the focus should be on the match.
