Bafana Bafana are now guaranteed R520 000 each as a bonus for reaching the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday night.
Coach Stuart Baxter’s men shocked hosts Egypt with a 1-0 victory at the Cairo International Stadium to progress to the next round of the tournament and will now face Nigeria at the same venue on Wednesday.
Speaking to journalists in Cairo last week, SAFA President Danny Jordaan confirmed the association had agreed to a bonus structure which would see Bafana pocketing up to a million each if they went all the way to win the AFCON.
The breakdown was arranged as follows:
R320 000 for reaching the last 16
R520 000 for the quarter-finals
R670 000 for the semi-finals
R920 000 for winning the tournament
Now that Bafana have progressed to the quarterfinals, they will each be receiving R520 000 and more if they continue to impress and move further in the AFCON.
It’s worth noting that this bonus structure was agreed on prior to the start of the tournament. In fact, Banyana Banyana had a similar agreement with SAFA for the Women’s World Cup in France.
