While Bafana were enjoying more of the possession, it was mainly in their own half and Nigeria definitely had more cutting edge and looked more likely to score.
Bafana had the first-half chance of the game when Thembinkosi Lorch's right-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right was close, but missed to the right after he was assisted by Percy Tau.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the 28th minute. Ahmed Musa combined well with Alex Iwobi down the left, with the latter squaring the ball in to the box to Samuel Chukwueze, whose shot deflected off Buhle Mkhwanazi and fell kindly back to in his path for him to complete a simple, close-range finish.
Nigeria were looking especially dangerous on the counter-attack, particularly through Musa on the left wing, who was giving Thamsanqa Mkhize a torrid time.
In the 36th minute, Gernot Rohr's side broke quickly on the counter-attack through the aforementioned Musa, who cut inside and laid the ball off for Chukwueze, but his effort went horribly high and wide.
Nigeria came close to doubling their lead four minutes after the interval. Thulani Hlatshwayo brought down Odion Ighalo, for which he was yellow-carded. Etebo curled an excellent free-kick towards the top right-hand corner, but Bafana shot-stopper Ronwen Williams pulled off a brilliant save as he managed to tip the ball on to his crossbar and to safety.
Chukwueze was having a good game and in the 56th minute got on the outside of Mkhwanazi down the right-hand side before delivering a devilish cross in to the area between the Bafana defence and goalkeeper, but no Super Eagles player could get on the end of it.
Bafana tried to shake things up by bringing on Themba Zwane for Lorch in the 57th minute. Six minutes later, Mkhize tried his luck from range and it was sweetly struck but it flew well wide of the left-hand upright in the end.
Bafana were playing better after the hour and were rewarded with an equaliser in the 73rd minute. Zwane won the free-kick off Wilfred Ndidi. Tau whipped in the delivery from the right-hand side and the ball came off Kenneth Omeruo before finding Bongani Zungu at the back post, who directed his header back across goal and in to the back of the net.
But Bafana hearts were broken in the 88th minute. Moses Simon delivered the corner with Williams missing his punch as William Troost-Ekong applied the finishing touch at the back post.
