Mark Mayambela, who was a fan favourite during his time at Orlando Pirates, has become a major hit with fans at his new club team, Djurgardens IF.
Mayambela made his first start for Djurgardens in the Swedish Cup match against Assyriska on Sunday, which his team won 2-0.
He came off after 66 minutes, but the South African midfielder made his mark in the match and the Djurgardens fans were heard singing his name when he was substituted.
The Khayelitsha born midfielder told the Siya crew that he was touched by the fans gratitude towards him.
“The minute I was called for the substitution, the crowd ivele yahlanya nje (just went crazy) and started chanting my name. It was just unbelievable! From the warm reception I received during the first friendly match and then this, yazi andiyi (you know, I don’t) believe ukuba iyenzeka (that it is happening) to me,” Mayambela told the crew.
“Obviously it is nothing new to me. I mean, I was loved and celebrated by the supporters at both Bloemfontein Celtic and Orlando Pirates whenever I took to the field, but it is happening in a foreign country now. I really feel blessed and humbled to be loved and appreciated by so many people,” concluded Mayambela.
