Both coaches played an instrumental role in the midfielder's development into one of the top players of the game and the Spaniard believes they are among the world's best.
"Pep has been a key figure in my career in every way," he told Marca.
"We speak the same footballing language, because we came through the same school and understand the game in the same way.
"That's why I think he's one of the best coaches in the world.
"He's doing a really good job at Bayern and they're among the clear favourites to win the Champions League every year. They're up there with Barca and Real Madrid as the best in Europe."
The 35-year-old, who joined Qatari Club Al Sadd in the recent transfer window, was also full of praise for Van Gaal, who gave him his first-team debut at Barcelona.
"He's an incredible, fantastic coach. He was ahead of his time," he added.
"I think he'll do a very good job at Manchester United over time, in fact he already is."
