The mother body of European football released its eighth so-called Club Licensing Benchmarking Report on European football recently to discuss the impact of its Financial Fair Play regulation.

One section of the report revealed that FC Barcelona had the highest wage bill for the 2015 financial year, with €340 million (R4.9 billion), due in part to success bonuses paid after the club won La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey in 2014/15.

That's €51 million (R736 million) more than Los Blancos, who are in second place with €289 million (R4.2 billion), while Chelsea appear in third position with €284 million (R4.1billion).

Manchester City follow with a wage budget of €276 million (R4 billion) in fourth spot, one ahead of cross-town rivals United with €266 million (R3.8 billion).

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are the only French side among the top 12, splashing €255 million (R3.7 billion) on salaries.

Arsenal, who spent €5 million less, appear in seventh position on the list with €255 million (R3.6 billion), while Bayern Munich (€236 million – R3.4 billion), Liverpool (€216 million – R3.1 billion) and Juventus (€198 million – R2.9 billion) complete the top 10.

AC Milan sit in 11th position with €164 million (R2.4 billion), just ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in 12th spot with €141 million (R2 billion).
