The Spain captain made his 176th appearance for La Furia Roja after coming in the 85th minute in their friendly against the Netherlands on Wednesday.
As a consequence, he has equalled Gianluigi Buffon's European record for the player with the most international appearances, and only five players in football history have represented their national teams more often.
Ramos made his debut for Spain in a 3-0 friendly against China on 26 March 2005, and could break Buffon's record on Saturday, when his country take on Switzerland.
The Real Madrid centre-back is now also eyeing the world record held by former Egypt defender Ahmed Hassan, who made 184 official appearances for the Pharaohs, according to FIFA.
