Jorge Sampaoli's side got off to a flying start in Buenos Aries, immediately taking the game to the Haitians with the likes of Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria in attack.
The Paris Saint-Germain star had a chance to put Argentina ahead seven minutes into the clash, but his effort from just inside the box was dragged wide.
Messi, who had linked up with Di Maria for the earlier effort, then got on the end of a fantastic long ball from Javier Mascherano just a minute later, but his attempted chip went straight into the hands of Haiti's Johny Placide.
Higuain had a chance with a header in the 11th minute, but his effort did not trouble the opposition goalkeeper. A minute later, Messi had another strike at goal, this time after leaving a number of players in his wake following a trademark run from midfield.
The deadlock was finally broken 17 minutes into the tie when the FC Barcelona superstar converted a penalty after PSG's Giovanni Lo Celso was fouled inside the area. The Albiceleste enjoyed most of the possession for the rest of the first half, but went into half-time with just the one-goal lead.
Messi grabbed his second of the game in the 58th minute, when he was in position to tap in a rebound from Lo Celso's initial effort, a strike that put the home side 2-0 up.
Sampaoli then made some changes, introducing the likes of Sergio Aguero and Cristian Pavon, who got the assist for Messi's hat-trick goal 66 minutes into the clash. The winger beat a couple of players down the left wing and played the ball into the box, where the Barca talisman was on hand to finish.
Messi then turned provider in the 69th minute, finding Aguero with an intricate pass from outside Haiti's penalty area. After easily muscling off a defender, the Manchester City man calmly found the back of the net.
The rest of the game saw the hosts create plenty more chances, but the score eventually ended 4-0.
