International Friendly Report: Russia v France 27 March 2018
Result: Russia 1-3 France
Date: 27 March 2018
Venue: Krestovsky Stadium
Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe played starring roles as France defeated Russia 3-1 in an international friendly on Tuesday evening.
France were looking to return to winning ways after surrendering a 2-0 lead to Colombia to lose 3-2 at home on Friday.
However, the visitors were soon on the back-foot after Fyodor Smolov give them an early scare, with Hugo Lloris forced to parry away the danger on 15 minutes.
Russia's pressure didn’t last long, though, as France quickly got out of their shells and fired in their first shot on target through Mbappe off a ricocheted effort from Martial.
France's elusive search for the opener continued, and after seeing a half-hearted penalty appeal turned away following a challenge on Martial, they finally went ahead.
Paris Saint Germain talisman Mbappe managed to cut in from the right after a long ball and beat Andrey Lunyov with a low shot five minutes before the break, 0-1.
Three minutes later, they almost made it two with Mbappe looking to turn from scorer to provider as he played in a low cross for Martial, but Lunyov managed to make a save.
It went from better to excellent for the French in the second half when Paul Pogba fired in a free-kick from 30-yards for a two-goal lead.
The flashbacks of Friday’s showdown in Paris looked to come back when they conceded off the boot of Smolov, who fired home an easy tap-in after 68 minutes to set up a nervy last spell of the game.
Any worries of a turnaround were washed away after a brilliant piece of magic by Mbappe saw them reclaim their two-goal lead with a sublime finish to end their international break on a high.
