Greece Stun Netherlands

International Friendly

Result: Netherlands 1-2 Greece

Date: 01 September 2016

Venue: Philips Stadion

Greece came from behind to secure a shock 2-1 win over the Netherlands in an international friendly on Thursday evening.

Kevin Strootman made a long-awaited return to the Orange startling alongside Wesley Sneijder and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Dutch broke the deadlock after 14 minutes as Jaansen skipped past a challenge before teeing up Georginio Wijnaldum, who bundled home from close range.

Greece pushed for an equaliser and were rewarded in the 29th minute courtesy of a powerful header from  Konstantinos Mitroglou, after some good work by Vassilis Torosidis down the left flank.

Danny Blind's charges saw most of the ball in the closing stages but were unable to carve out clear-cut openings and were reduced to efforts from distance.

With the hosts struggling to mount any serious attacks, Blind introduced Davy Propper and Jorrit Hendrix after the hour-mark.

However, it was the Greeks who took the lead in the 74th minute. Konstantinos Mitroglou dashed the left flank, before effort saved by Zoet, but Giannis Gianniotas was on hand to tap home from close range.

The Netherlands pushed for an equalisng goal in the closing stages and also introduced Bas Dost, but they were unable to bypass the Greek defence.

Blind's charges get their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign underway away to Sweden on 6 September.
