Result: Italy 1-1 Ukraine
Date: 10 October 2018
Venue: Luigi Ferraris
Ukraine rallied back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Italy in an international friendly on Wednesday evening.
The Azzurri made a promising start to the game as if they had something to prove, after disappointment in the last international break.
Ukraine made things easy for the hosts inside the first quarter of an hour as they were losing possession cheaply in the midfield areas.
Instead of upping their tempo, Roberto Mancini’s charges were not in a rush to go forward after 20 minutes, still trying to build their rhythm with combination play.
That was the trend for the rest of the half, as the sides went into the halftime break level pegging.
Federico Bernardeschi broke the deadlock for Italy ten minutes after the break with a vicious shot from outside the box that looped into the top of the corner, 1-0.
Ruslan Malinovskiy got the visitors level seven minutes later with a scuffed effort at the far post following a corner that sneaked into the bottom corner, 1-1.
The match opened up 20 minutes before time as both sets of players were revived by the two quick goals.
It was Italy though that enjoyed the lion’ share of possession with a quarter of an hour remaining, looking to regain their lead.
Mancini’s men pushed for the winner in the closing minutes, but Shevchenko’s charges held on for the share of the spoils.
