International Friendly

Result: Germany 1-1 Spain

Date: 23 March 2018

Venue: ESPRIT Arena

Thomas Muller cancelled out Rodrigo's early strike as Germany and Spain played to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly on Friday evening.

The visitors broke the deadlock after just six minutes as Rodrigo collected a pass from Andres Iniesta before firing a left-footed effort past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Germany looked for an instant reply as Jonas Hector went close with a volley that sailed over David de Gea's crossbar, before Timo Werner went close with a left-footed effort minutes later.

The equaliser eventually arrived after 35 minutes thanks to a fine dipping strike from Thomas Muller that left De Gea with no chance.

Germany nearly took the lead just before the break but Julian Draxler dallied on the ball before Sergio Ramos managed to clear.

The second half continued in same vein as the first with both sides pushing for the second goal as both keepers were called into action in the opening 10 minutes.

Germany went agonisingly close to taking the lead on 65 minutes when Toni Kroos rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box.

Diego Costa was introduced three minutes later and he nearly handed Spain the lead on 76 minutes but Ter Stegen produced a fine save to keep out the striker's close-range effort.

The Germans looked stronger heading into the closing stages of the second half but they were unable to bypass the Spain defence again and had to settle for a draw.
