The lead was almost doubled on 21 minutes when N'Golo Kante rattled the upright with a strike from distance, before Mbappe forced Sirigu into another save a minute later.
Les Bleus were awarded a penalty on 28 minutes when Lucas Hernandez was brought to the ground. Antoine Griezmann stepped and converted the spot-kick, 2-0.
Italy did not sit back as they halved the deficit after 36 minutes, with Leonardo Bonucci tapping home from close range after a free-kick from Mario Balotelli was pushed back into the danger zone.
The final 10 minutes of the first half was a lively affair, although neither side could to the scoreline before the break.
Three minutes into the second half, the French nearly added a third goal as Ousmane Dembele hit the crossbar with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.
Dembele was not to be denied in the 63rd minute, though, as the Barcelona forward found the top corner with a fine curling strike.

As a result, chances were hard to come by for both sides in the final 10 minutes of the half as France ran out convincing winners on the night.
