Italy Frustrate England At Wembley
International Friendly Report: England v Italy 27 March 2018
Result: England 1-1 Italy
Date: 27 March 2018
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Lorenzo Insigne's late penalty canceled out Jamie Vardy's strike as England drew 1-1 with Italy at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Vardy should have opened the scoring for the Three Lions in the ninth minute after going through on goal but he mistimed his step at a crucial moment and the chance went begging.
Ciro Immobile should have punished the hosts in the 16th minute after he got on the end of Antonio Candreva's cross, but he somehow sent his header over the crossbar.
Vardy eventually put the English ahead on 26 minutes after latching onto Jesse Lingard's quick free-kick before rifling the ball into the roof of the net, 1-0.
Raheem Sterling managed to set up Ashley Young seven minutes before half-time but the England wing-back’s low shot was deflected wide of the mark as the score remained 1-0 at the break.
Southgate’s men played deep in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza, although they continued to threaten on the counter.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was a beneficiary of a counter-attack three minutes before the hour, surging into the box but firing straight at goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The hosts raised their tempo with 20 minutes left to play, showing relative superiority as they had a good spell of possession.
However, the Azzurri were awarded a penalty four minutes before time following a review with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Insigne stepped up and leveled matters from 12-yards out as England conceded their first international goal in 10 hours and 24 minutes.
In the end, neither side could find the winner in the closing minutes as the encounter ended all square.
