Hulk Nets Winner As Brazil Beat Costa Rica
Result: Brazil 1-0 Costa Rica
Date: 5 September 2015
Venue: Red Bull Arena, New Jersey
Brazil dominated their friendly clash against Costa Rica in New Jersey on Saturday but were restricted to a 1-0 victory.
The South American giants put their noses in front in the 10th minute when Hulk powered down the right wing before cutting inside and placing his shot past Pemberton in goal.
Hulk had a chance to double the lead in the 38th minute. Brazil counter-attacked swiftly with the striker leading the way. He made it to the edge of the box but lost his footing as he tried to get past the last defender.
Costa Rica felt hard done by shortly before the break when their penalty appeal was turned down. Ruiz went down in the Brazilian penalty area under challenges from Fernandinho and David Luiz, but the referee waved play on.
Marcelo had an opportunity to net a second for the five-time World Cup champions just after the break as he played a one-two with Hulk before unloading with a shot across the face of goal, but it went wide.
Willian should have made it 2-0 in the 59th minute when a quick counter through Costa saw a cross fall at the Chelsea midfielder's feet, but he sent his shot into the side netting.
Brazil continued to pile on the pressure but Pemberton proved his worth between the sticks for Costa Rica in the 74th minute as he kept out Costa's bullet header after a terrific cross from Kaka.
