International Champions Cup Report: Liverpool v Borussia Dortmund 22 July 2018
International Champions Cup
Result: Liverpool 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
Date: 22 July 2018
Venue: Bank of America Stadium
Christian Pulisic netted a brace to inspire Borussia Dortmund to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the International Champions Cup.
The Reds were still without the services of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mande, although Fabinho did start while Naby Keita was named on the bench.
Dortmund came into the clash on the back of a 1-0 win over Manchester City on Friday evening, with Mario Gotze netting the winner.
Clear cut chances were few and far between in the opening 15 minutes, despite both sides playing at a good tempo early on.
The Reds were dealt a blow after 20 minutes when Joel Matip was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Joe Gomez.
Five minutes later, the Reds broke the deadlock through Virgil Van Dijk, who headed home Andrew Robertson's corner.
Unfortunately, Van Dijk's goal proved to be the final piece of goal-mouth action in the fist stanza as Dortmund struggled to make any in-roads in the final third.
Both managers made wholesale changes at the start of the second half as they looked to freshen things up.
It was a Dortmund substitute, Christian Pulisic, who restored parity from the penalty spot after the winger had been brought down in the box after 66 minutes.
Liverpool went close to restoring their lead in the 77th minute as Dominic Solanke played in Alberto Moreno with a delightful pass, but the latter saw his effort tipped wide.
However, Dortmund managed to snatch the winning goal in the 89th minute as Pulisic completed his brace by drilling home a left-footed effort into the far corner after being picked out by Marcel Schelzer.
The Bundesliga outfit managed to grab a third goal in the third minute of stoppage time thanks to a strike from Jacob Bruun Larsen.
