International Champions Cup
Result: Arsenal 5-1 Paris Saint-Germain
Date: 28 July 2018
Venue: The National Stadium
A brace from Alexandre Lacazette and solitary strike from Mesut Ozil inspired Arsenal to a 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the International Champions Cup.
Mesut Özil, who was the captain for the day, opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 13th minute with a strike from close range after he was setup by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Alex Iwobi almost doubled the lead for the London club in the 23rd minute with a chance at the back post but veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made a good save.
Arsenal were dictating play after 35 minutes, looking increasingly likely to get a two goal cushion but Buffon was standing in the way of a flurry of goals as he kept the Parisians in the match with stupendous saves.
Emery’s men should have scored more goals but went into the break with a slender 1-0 lead over the French side largely due to the brilliance of the former Juventus shot-stopper.
The French side deservedly equalised on the hour-mark as Christopher Nkunku converted a penalty after Sead Kolasinac brought down Timothy Weah.
Second-half substitute Alexandre Lacazette restored the lead for Emery’s men seven minutes later with a glancing header past Buffon following a superb cross from Smith Rowe, 2-1.
Lacazette completed his brace and made it 3-1 to the Gunners in the 71st minute with another header that sailed in off the post.
The Parisians were trying to get back into the match but they lacked momentum towards the end.
With three minutes remaining, Rob Holding netted with a superb header to bag the Premier League side's fourth goal.
Edward Nketiah completed the rout in second-half stoppage time with a close range finish as the Gunner ran out 5-1 winners.
