Arsenal defeated London rivals Chelsea 6-5 on penalties in the International Cup, after it ended 1-1 after regulation time on Wednesday evening.
The Blues got off to a fine start as an un-marked Rudiger directed a powerful header into the bottom corner from a corner.
With 14 minutes played, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after Callum Hudson-Odoi was brought down by Hector Bellerin, however Alvaro Morata stepped up and had his effort saved by goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Hudson-Odoi proved to be a big threat down the left flank for the Blues as he carved an opening for Morata, who was denied by the on-rushing Cech after 24 minutes.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should have restored matters eight minutes later but the Gabonese forward failed to turn home Henrikh Mkhitaryan's cross at the far post.
Maurizio Sarri's men enjoyed most of the possession for the remaining stages of the half but they were unable to add to their tally.
Rudiger went close to doubling Chelsea's advantage 10 minutes into the second half but he steered his header wide of the mark.
The Gunners responded with a change after the hour mark with Emile Smith Rowe making way for Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi.
Alexandre Lacazette nearly pulled Arsenal level with 15 minutes remaining, bu this low strike from close range sailed inches wide of the post.
Chelsea substitute goalkeeper Marcin Bulka came to his side's rescue in the 85th minute with a good reflex save to keep out Iwobi's effort.
The Gunners were not to be denied in second-half stoppage time as Lacazette fired home at the far post, sending the clash into a penalty shoot-out.
