Work on the eye-catching arena, which will be designed in the shape of a lotus flower and is home to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande, started last week.
The new stadium will boast 100 000 seats, overtaking the Camp Nou as the world's biggest football-only stadium – a title the latter could reclaim once its own planned revamp to takes its capacity to 105 000 is completed in 2024.
The new Guangzhou stadium is set to be finished in 2022, with Xia Haijun, president of real estate conglomerate Evergrande, telling reporters it will help to take Chinese football to the next level.
"Evergrande Stadium will become a new world-class landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House (in Australia) and Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and an important symbol of Chinese football to the world," he said, as quoted by ESPN.
"We hope the stadium will host the opening ceremony of the 2023 Asian Cup."
The Lotus concept beat seven other design submissions from the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States.
The stadium will boast 168 VIP boxes and 16 VVIP boxes, while the Evergrande conglomerate, who took over the Guangzhou club in 2010, has also announced plans to construct at least two more arenas with capacities of at least 80 000 in China.
Since being taken over by the abovementioned conglomerate, Guangzhou Evergrande have won eight Chinese Super League titles and two Asian Champions League trophies.
